5 Big Mistakes Keeping Your Brand Out of Retail Stores (And How to Fix Them)

5 Big Mistakes That Are Blocking You From Getting in Front of Retail Buyers (And How to Fix Them)

Getting your product into retail stores is exciting but also overwhelming. You’ve done the hard work of creating a product, building your brand, and connecting with customers, but now comes the hard part: getting retail buyers to notice you.

As a retail buyer with over 15 years of experience, I’ve seen countless founders make the same mistakes that stop them from even getting a meeting. In this post, I’m breaking down the 5 biggest mistakes founders make when trying to connect with retail buyers and exactly how to avoid them so your brand gets the attention it deserves.

1. Not Researching the Retailer

It sounds simple, but this is the #1 mistake I see. Many founders assume their product can fit anywhere, but buyers know their customers and if your product doesn’t match their store or their audience, it’s an instant pass.

How to Fix It:

  • Survey your current customers to see where they shop.
  • Visit retail stores and study the shelf look at packaging, product placement, and category trends.
  • Match your product to retailers that make sense for your brand. For example, don’t pitch sunglasses to a supplement store just because your audience might shop there buyers are thinking about relevance, not assumptions.

2. Sending Generic Emails

Copy-paste emails are the fastest way to get ignored. Buyers can tell when you’re mass-emailing without considering their store.

How to Fix It:

  • Personalize every email with why your product is relevant to their store.
  • Include data from surveys or polls to show your audience is likely to shop there.
  • Reference a past conversation if you met them at an expo or event.

Example: “Thanks for stopping by my booth at Expo West! Our discussion about menopause skincare trends really stuck with me, and I know my brand would align perfectly with your customer.”

3. Not Responding Quickly

If a buyer responds to your outreach, slow replies can cost you opportunities. Retail calendars move fast, and delays can push you out of the planogram or even the buying cycle.

How to Fix It:

  • Respond within 24–48 hours to any communication.
  • Keep your messages clear and professional, showing that you’re ready to move forward.

4. Leading With a Line Sheet Alone

Sending just a line sheet is a missed opportunity. Line sheets show products, prices, and SKUs but they don’t tell your story or highlight your unique value.

How to Fix It:

  • Create a retail pitch deck instead that includes:
    • Your brand story
    • Curated assortment for that retailer
    • Data showing why your products will sell
    • Shelf-ready photos or examples

A line sheet should support your pitch, not lead it.

5. Connecting Only Once

Retail buyers are busy. One email is rarely enough. If you don’t follow up strategically, you could miss your chance even if they want your product.

How to Fix It:

  • Plan a follow-up schedule (weekly, then monthly, as needed).
  • Include updates, news, or data that adds value to your outreach.
  • Don’t just say “following up” show progress: new press, product launches, or relevant achievements.

Example: “Over the last 30 days, we’ve been featured in Essence Magazine’s Top 50 Skincare Brands and added three new products would love to discuss how these could fit your assortment.”

Getting in front of retail buyers isn’t about luck, it’s about strategy, relevance, and persistence. Avoiding these five mistakes will put you ahead of most founders and dramatically increase your chances of landing meaningful retail partnerships.

Every successful retail placement starts with a thoughtful, personalized approach that shows buyers your brand belongs on their shelves.
