How Mah Melanin Landed in Sam's Club: Ardean Miller's Journey Building a Black-Owned Gift Wrap Brand
Ardean Miller describes herself as “just a girl from the hood with a dream” and what a dream she’s brought to life. As the founder of Mah Melanin, she created a line of culturally authentic gift wrap after realizing traditional wrapping paper didn’t reflect her family or community.
Today, she’s the first Black-owned brand in the gift wrap category to partner with Sam’s Club, Hallmark, and Lowe’s. Here’s how she made that happen step by step, mistake by mistake, and with relentless faith and preparation.
Episode 24 of Shelf Talks Podcast dives deep into her journey building a brand and launching in retail. Listen to the entire episode anywhere you listen to your podcasts including Spotify and Apple Podcast (links to episode below).
From Frustration to Innovation
The idea for Mah Melanin started while Ardean was wrapping gifts for her kids one Christmas and noticed the glaring absence of representation on the paper. None of the Santas looked like her family.
Rather than wait for someone else to fix it, she decided to make her own. Her first design? A Santa wearing a gold chain, sneakers, and gold-rimmed glasses cool, confident, and deeply relatable to her culture.
Preparation Before Product
Ardean didn’t rush to market. She spent over a year preparing—building her confidence, learning the gift wrap industry, researching manufacturers, and studying the differences between paper types, weights, finishes, and retail presentation.
She paused the project after struggling to find a manufacturer. But two years later, with more knowledge and clarity, she re-contacted the same manufacturer only to realize the issue wasn’t them… she just hadn’t been ready yet.
The First Product & First Sales
After approving the first sample of her “Santa Baby” gift wrap, Ardean placed an order for 1,000 rolls. It was a bold move for a brand-new founder but within a few months, she sold out.
She built her own website, tested early shipping with family and friends, and used Facebook groups, Instagram, and personal DMs to drive awareness. In one day, she received 300 orders—and Mah Melanin began to take off.
Her First Retail Deal: Making It With Lowe’s
Ardean applied for Lowe’s “Making It” program and was selected to sell online. This gave her national exposure, her first retail relationship, and the confidence to scale.
She followed it with:
-
A surprise endorsement from Master P and actress Denise Boutte
-
Becoming a finalist on QVC’s The Big Find
-
A $10K grant from LegalZoom + NBA program
The Sam’s Club Breakthrough via Walmart Open Call
Ardean applied for Walmart’s Open Call once and got rejected.
The second year, she hesitated… but on the last day, she applied again. Out of 19,000 submissions, Mah Melanin was selected. She pitched four products across gift wrap and backpacks—and won a deal with Sam’s Club.
“I had to learn about case packs, barcodes, shipping, pallet displays, and meet every testing deadline in just a few months.”
Despite the tight turnaround, she made it. Her products launched on Sam’s Club’s website in October and quickly sold out.
How She Got Into Physical Stores
After a successful online launch, Ardean asked for her products to be placed in stores. She was told no at first.
She came back months later with metrics: sales data, screenshots of customer demand, and proof her products were moving.
That persistence led to a 20-store test in Sam’s Club, then a 50% expansion the following year.
She supported the launch with:
-
In-store mascot visits
-
Social campaigns
-
Local influencer support
-
Earned media (Black Enterprise, Because of Them We Can)
Retail Expansion: Hallmark and Beyond
Thanks to strong performance at Sam’s Club and trusted relationships, Ardean was connected with Hallmark and launched Mah Melanin there, too.
Her key to retail success?
-
Build deep buyer relationships
-
Ask for visibility (homepage features, gift guides, supplier spotlights)
-
Always be prepared with real numbers, real inventory, and real passion
Advice for Indie Brand Founders
-
Prepare before you pitch. Know your manufacturing, product specs, and timelines.
-
Don’t take rejection personally. It’s often just “not yet.”
-
Study retail language. You need to speak the same language as buyers.
-
Start with one retailer and master it. Don’t rush into multiple deals.
-
Track everything. From shipping costs to customer feedback—data drives doors.
-
Be persistent. Ardean got into every retailer by following up, showing progress, and believing in her mission.
